With Barry Trotz now in office as Nashville's General Manager, big changes were expected in the Predators organization.
Trotz has been very active in his first week as GM. He signed many free agents and traded some key players from the team.
Perhaps the most shocking move was when he bought out Matt Duchene, who ended up signing with Dallas.
But that's not all. Apparently, he was working behind the scenes to trade Duchene instead of buying him out.
Duchene for Kuznetsov?
According to Elliotte Friedman, Barry Trotz had his eyes set on Evgeny Kuznetsov. His plan was to trade Duchene for the Russian forward. However, the Capitals had no interest in Duchene and decided to keep Kuznetsov, which led to Duchene being placed on waivers and the signing of Ryan O'Reilly.
Trotz and Kuznetsov won the Stanley Cup in 2018. Maybe Trotz was trying to recreate that success.
"Before Nashville signed Ryan O'Reilly, and they might've done it anyway, I don't know, but they were talking to Washington about Kuznetsov, l wonder if it was a Kuznetsov-for-Duchene deal."
