Back in 2017, the Colorado Avalanche lost the draft lottery after finishing last by 21 points and fell to the 4th selection in the NHL entry draft. While Nico Hischier and Nolan Patrick went 1 & 2, Cale Makar fell to the Colorado Avalanche at 4th.
Since Makar made his debut in the 2019 playoffs, we all knew he was going to be something special.
He entered the league officially in the 2019-20 season, where he went on to win the Calder trophy scoring 50 points in 57 games and has been nominated for a Norris trophy since as well.
Over 3 seasons, he has tallied 48 goals and 132 assists in 178 games, which is incredible as a defenceman of his age.
When Makar was drafted,
Nathan MacKinnon was not a fan, and it's safe to say, he was definitely wrong in his opinion.
MacKinnon had this to say:
What is this? Who did we just draft? He looks ok but these [AJHL players] are awful
Good thing MacKinnon is not a scout because Makar is now talked about as one of the best players in the league.
