The Canadiens are one of the NHL's most exciting young teams, and now, it appears as though they've got a stud goaltender to join their young core.
After a few years of a rebuild, the Montreal Canadiens have turned their roster into one of the most exciting in the National Hockey League, and after a Stanley Cup Playoffs appearance a year ago, they've got much bigger goals in mind this season.
All of the attention especially goes to the core of
Cole Caufield,
Lane Hutson and
Ivan Demidov among others, but now, it appears as though they may have a legitimate No. 1 in net appearing as they continue their ascension in the Atlantic Division.
That goaltender would be 24-year old Jakub Dobes, whom the Canadiens selected in the fifth-round of the 2020 NHL Draft, appearing as a genuine NHL caliber goalie a season ago.
Now, he's continued the impressive start to his career, becoming the first rookie in
NHL history to start his first two seasons 5-0-0 after he ended the 2024/25 campaign with a 7-3-4 record.
This year, Dobes has seemingly taken his game to another level, posting a ridiculous 1.77 GAA and a .940 save percentage in five games, and while
Samuel Montembeault began the year as Montreal's No. 1, that appears to be changing quickly.
Behind Montembeault and Dobes, the Canadiens are now 7-3 on the new season, and while they are young, clearly they have the electric talent needed to compete in 2025/26, and if the goaltending can remain strong, this is a team that rightfully has the hopes of a Stanley Cup.
