Montreal Canadiens fans love Cole Caufield and Lane Hutson. There's no questioning that.
But could those same fans eventually give two of the team's biggest stars a reason to want out?
The booing of the American national anthem at the Bell Centre has become a sensitive topic, and it's one that might be worth taking a little more seriously.
According to Maxime Truman of "DansLesCoulisses", Caufield really doesn't appreciate hearing his country's anthem being booed.
And can you blame him?
Why Caufield is bothered
Caufield is American. So is Hutson.
Both players give everything they have for the Canadiens, and hearing fans boo their national anthem probably isn't the greatest feeling.
Now, nobody is saying they're about to request a trade.
Caufield is under contract until 2031, while Hutson is signed through 2034.
Neither player has publicly suggested that the anthem controversy is making him want to leave Montreal.
But here's the thing. Just because they're happy in Montreal today doesn't mean things can't change down the road.
Playing for the Canadiens already comes with enough pressure.
The media scrutiny, the expectations, the constant attention. It's not always easy.
Do fans really need to add another uncomfortable element to the mix?
Sure, some people will argue that booing the anthem is about politics, not the players. And that's fair.
But that doesn't necessarily make it any easier for the Americans wearing the Canadiens jersey.
Montreal has something special brewing with this young core.
The last thing the organization needs is for players like Caufield and Hutson to eventually feel more comfortable playing somewhere else.
Maybe the booing won't change anything. But is it really worth finding out?
