The Washington Capitals have fired assistant coach Mitch Love. This comes only hours after the NHL suspended him for the rest of the season following an investigation.
This off-season, there was plenty of drama surrounding the Washington Capitals, with most of it involving assistant coach Mitch Love, who was a major Head Coach candidate around the NHL.
After allegations came to light about the 41-year old former AHL Head Coach, Love was placed on leave by the Capitals, and on Sunday, we finally found out the results of the NHL's investigation.
Frank Seravalli announced a
season long suspension for Love, but now, there has been another development in the story, this time from the Capitals organization themselves.
Washington Capitals Part Ways With Mitch Love
After this report came out, the Capitals were quick to announce their final decision on Love, revealing that following the investigation, they have decided to part ways with him.
Mitch Love has been relieved of his duties as an assistant coach, effective immediately. This decision follows the findings of an NHL-led investigation into past allegations. The organization is committed to maintaining the highest standards of conduct and accountability.
It's unclear exactly what evidence came to light during Gary Bettman and the NHL's investigation into the situation, but for the Capitals to move this swiftly, they must have deemed decisive action necessary.
While some would have seen the suspension as punishment enough, the Capitals are holding themselves to their highest possible standard, with the findings from the NHL enough to part ways with Love as they look to continue success in 2025/26 without him.
