Matt Coronato had a stellar campaign in 2024/25, but after struggling early this year for the Flames, he's shockingly been made a healthy scratch.
The Calgary Flames are off to one of the worst starts in franchise history this year, and if they lose on Sunday, their team will be sitting at 1-8-1 through their first 10 games.
Unfortunately, almost everyone on this team has struggled throughout their first nine games, with the team managing a total of 16 goals in that time, ranking last in the NHL with an average of just 1.67 goals per game.
Matt Coronato Shockingly Scratched Against New York
One player that nobody expected to get punished for these struggles was young star Matt Coronato, who had a career year last season, tallying 24 goals and 47 points in 77 games played, the first full season of his NHL career after being a first-round pick of Calgary back in 2021.
However, he's scored in just one of the team's nine games this season, and as explained by Head Coach Ryan Huska, he's
having the night off on Sunday to refresh and catch his breath.
In his place will be veteran forward
Justin Kirkland, and while it's a move that's drawn plenty of backlash from Flames fans, the rationale of players simply trying to force things too much makes some type of sense from Huska.
Ultimately, nothing is going right in Calgary this season, but even with Coronato's struggles, he possesses one of the best shots in the entire NHL, with the decision being one that many will question, especially if the Flames fall to 1-8-1 with a loss against New York.
