In spite of his controversial history, Logan Mailloux got to live out a childhood dream and play his first-ever game in the NHL last night for the Montreal Canadiens. The young defenseman was even able to secure his first point in his first game on an assist.
More interestingly, though, was Mailloux's decision-making before the game even started. Like many other rookies in his class, he decided to skirt the NHL's new rules about wearing a helmet during his rookie lap. This will result in a $2,500 fine for the rookie.
With his past, it is surprising that Mailloux decided to go ahead and break the rules anyway in his first-ever game. However, the rule is new and it has been broken by nearly every rookie to skate this season, so in that sense he is no different from his peers.
