Cheating scandal could lead to team Canada losing gold medals
The men's and women's Canadian soccer teams are under major fire as they have been accused of spying and cheating on their opponents for years.
It was revealed that the Canadian soccer teams hired contractors and coaching staff whose sold purpose was to spy on the opponents. A huge scandal surrounds the women's team who are being accused of spying during their gold-medal Olympic win in 2021. They are at risk of having to forfeit that medal if they are found guilty of filming closed-door training sessions.
The women's team is also being accused of filming Panama in July 2022 as they attempted to qualify for the Women's World Cup in Australia.
Canada's men's and women's soccer teams have relied on drones and spying for years, sources say
Coaching staff and contractors working with Canada's men's and women's national soccer teams have been engaged for years in efforts to film the closed-door training sessions of their opponents, including during the women's gold-medal winning Olympic tournament in 2021, sources told TSN.
The men's national team is also involved in their own scandal, as it appears they were using drones to record a U.S. training session on November 15, 2019, in Florida. Canada ended up losing that game 4-1.
Two years after that, someone on the Honduras side spotted a drone flying over the team's training session, which led them to immediately stop their session in Toronto, as they feared someone was recording them.
An investigation is being launched by FIFA to determine if these allegations of spying and cheating are accurate. If Canada is found guilty, they will likely face a slap of fines, as well as having to forfeit any medals or trophies they won, including their 2021 gold.
