Toronto's blue line is getting crowded, and Philippe Myers is the odd man out.
Maple Leafs GM John Chayka has spent the summer stacking the defense corps, and the numbers just don't add up in Myers' favor anymore.
Why Toronto is ready to move on
Chayka brought in Darren Raddysh and Emil Andrae, welcomed Chris Tanev back into the fold, and managed to keep Morgan Rielly off the trade market entirely.
Add in prospect Ben Danford, a player the organization is genuinely excited about and expects to push for NHL minutes as soon as this season, and Myers simply doesn't have a clear path to regular ice time in Toronto anymore.
The 6-foot-6 blueliner is still just one year away from unrestricted free agency, carrying a very manageable $850,000 cap hit that almost any team in the league could absorb without blinking.
Last season he appeared in 39 games for the Leafs and chipped in two points, and across 233 career NHL games he's tallied 10 goals and 43 points.
Teams have long been intrigued by his size and mobility, even if the offensive production hasn't fully caught up.
Who could come calling
Three teams keep coming up in the conversation: the Philadelphia Flyers, Anaheim Ducks and Montreal Canadiens.
The Flyers and Ducks in particular are said to be growing desperate for depth on the back end, which makes them the most logical landing spots if Chayka decides to pull the trigger before or during training camp.
Toronto likely wouldn't get much back, but a depth forward for the AHL's Marlies could be enough to get it done.
Don't be surprised if this one moves quickly once camp gets closer.
