Bunting could give the Oilers a scrappy top nine scoring option after training alongside McDavid and Hyman this offseason in Edmonton.
Michael Bunting has spent his summer skating with Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman, and Oilers fans have taken notice.
The veteran winger remains unsigned as free agency drags into late August, and the sight of him working out alongside two of Edmonton's biggest stars has fueled speculation that a deal could be coming.
Bunting split last season between Nashville and Dallas, finishing with 14 goals and 33 points across 74 games.
Those numbers may not jump off the page, but anyone who has watched him play knows his value goes beyond the stat sheet.
He plays with an edge, he battles in front of the net, and he has a track record of clicking with elite playmakers.
His run alongside Auston Matthews in Toronto back in 2022 remains the best stretch of his career.
Why the fit makes sense in Edmonton
The Oilers have roughly $5 million in cap space to work with, and their front office has made no secret of wanting more secondary scoring after their playoff exit against Anaheim.
Bunting slotting into a middle six role alongside familiar faces like McDavid and Hyman would give Edmonton a low risk, high reward addition without breaking the bank.
That post has already drawn plenty of reaction from Oilers fans eager to see the front office get something done before training camp opens.
What comes next for Bunting
Nothing is official yet, and Bunting could still land elsewhere, with teams like Seattle, Buffalo and Montreal reportedly keeping tabs on him as well.
But offseason training sessions with McDavid rarely happen by accident, and Oilers fans are allowed to dream a little.
