Two Canadiens insiders confirm Montreal as potential landing spot for Connor McDavid

The Connor McDavid to Montreal chatter picked up again this week, and this time it came from two credible voices instead of one.
Montreal Gazette columnist Stu Cowan brought up the idea on the Sick Podcast with Tony Marinaro, suggesting the Canadiens would be a logical fit if the Oilers ever move on from their captain.
Cowan stopped short of predicting it would happen. His point was simpler: Montreal is positioned well enough, with cap space and prospect capital, to make a real run at McDavid if Edmonton's hand is ever forced.
Basu Weighs In, Urges Patience
Arpon Basu of The Athletic fielded a reader question on the same topic in his August 19 Canadiens mailbag.
Basu confirmed there is real buzz building around the idea, but he was careful to temper expectations, framing it as noise for now rather than anything close to a realistic plan.
The speculation has fuel behind it. McDavid signed a two-year extension worth 12.5 million dollars per season last October instead of locking in a maximum eight-year deal, a decision widely viewed as him preserving future flexibility.
That contract runs through the 2027-28 season, after which he becomes a full unrestricted free agent.
Numbers Keep the Conversation Alive
McDavid posted 138 points last season on 48 goals and 90 assists, then saw Edmonton bounced in the first round by Anaheim.
Whether that playoff exit changes his long-term thinking remains unknown, and both Cowan and Basu made clear nobody actually knows what McDavid wants.
For now, Montreal fans have two reporters willing to entertain the idea publicly, even if neither is calling it likely.
