Detroit left its captain off the graphic and nobody in Hockeytown missed it.
The Red Wings dropped a promotional post Wednesday showing off the NHL 27 player ratings for four of their top names, Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat, Moritz Seider and John Gibson all featured with their overall grades front and center.
Three of those players landed at 89 overall, with Gibson coming in at 85.
Missing from the graphic entirely was Dylan Larkin, who also carries an 89 overall in the game, tied with Tage Thompson, Nick Schmaltz and Evgeni Malkin among centers around the league.
It did not take long for fans to catch the omission.
A captain left off his own team's graphic
The timing is what makes this sting.
Larkin has worn the C in Detroit for years, but his relationship with the front office has reportedly grown strained, and there has been growing chatter that he may want a change of scenery.
The Red Wings are also still searching for a general manager after Steve Yzerman stepped away from that role, leaving the franchise in a strange holding pattern heading into the fall.
Leaving Larkin out of a simple ratings promo could be nothing more than a graphic design choice.
It could also be read as something else entirely given everything swirling around him this offseason.
What it means for the Larkin situation
Nothing about a social media post confirms a trade is coming.
But every small detail gets magnified when a captain's future is this uncertain.
Red Wings fans are watching closely for any sign of where things stand between Larkin and the organization he has spent his entire career with.
