RUMOUR: Canadian Team Eyeing Mark Scheifele

With just a year left on Mark Scheifele's contract, he seems to be keen on avoiding another season in Winnipeg. He's formally requested a trade during the post-season, but the Jets seem unhurried to facilitate it. We can assume they are waiting for the trade deadline in order to maximize their return.

Numerous teams would gladly pay a premium to have him, especially at the trade deadline when the playoffs are nearing. The Toronto Maple Leafs have been a rumoured destination for Scheifele considering it is his hometown team.

The challenge, however, lies in the salary cap. While it is technically possible, it's going to be tricky. There's a chance Treliving could manage it, or if not he might wait it out for free agency next year when Scheifele hits the open market. Scheifele is 30 years old, he notched 68 points last season, 42 of which were goals, but on the other hand his playoff performance was underwhelming, with just one goal in four games.

Considering the playoff trouble in Toronto, should they really be going after a player who lacks playoff production? It's hard to say.
