Given their massive fanbase and history, it's no surprise that the Maple Leafs are one of the most hated teams in the NHL, and after their latest move, they've only invited more.
Despite declaring that he's healthy and ready to go for 2023-24 just a few months ago, the Leafs placed Matt Murray on LTIR, essentially saving themselves almost $6 million against the salary cap.
However, the same can't be said for the Ottawa Senators, who retained 25% of his salary in the trade with Toronto, and due to this move, they are now on the hook for all of that money, and can't bury it like the Maple Leafs.
Now, the Senators fanbase have been up in arms about how the Leafs are cheating the salary cap and acting unfairly, and at this point, it's hard to blame them for being upset.
However, the NHL's rules have allowed for teams to take advantage of moves like this, and given how much money it's saved Toronto, don't expect them to be the only team making moves like this going forward.
