At the start of the season, the New York Rangers were expected to contend for the Stanley Cup. However, they have struggled during the first quarter of the season and are on a five-game losing streak.
Despite these struggles, the Rangers still sit in the first wild card spot in the East and could certainly turn the ship around soon.
Their slow start has led to GM Chris Drury placing core players like Jacob Trouba and Chris Kreider on the trade block.
Now, it looks like GM Chris Drury and head coach Peter Laviolette may take extreme measures with Trouba, potentially stripping him of the captaincy.
We don't see teams strip players of their captaincy. Most recently, the Winnipeg Jets stripped Blake Wheeler of the 'C' in 2022.
More famously, the San Jose Sharks stripped Joe Thorton of the captaincy after blowing a 3-0 lead to the LA Kings in the 2014 NHL playoffs.
Trouba has certainly been disappointing for the Rangers this year and with an $8 million cap hit, he is also holding back the Rangers' front office from making more moves at the 2025 NHL trade deadline.
Only time will tell if the Rangers decide to strip Jacob Trouba of the captaincy but it will certainly be a storyline to look out for over the coming weeks.
