Today's announcement of the Hockey Hall of Fame's 2023 Class came with some disappointing news for hockey fans all over the globe. Fans are once again left scratching their heads as to how the higher-ups in institutions such as the NHL and the HHoF can justify their actions.
Mogilny Receives The Cold Shoulder
With the announcement of the Class of 2023 came the news that Alexander Mogilny would once again not be inducted into the HHoF. Mogilny has been eligible for some time now and is by all means deserving of a place in the Hall, yet they refuse to vote him in.
Mogilny scored at a ridiculous pace during his 990-game career, netting himself over 1,000 points. On top of that, the Russian sniper had to defect from the Soviet Union in order to play for the Buffalo Sabres. Defecting from the USSR was considered to be one of the most dangerous things a person could do, especially a high-profile athlete such as Mogilny.
HHoF Won't Accept Russians
Following the news of Mogilny's omission, we learned some disturbing news regarding the HHoF's approach to Russian players. According to this report, the HHoF won't be inducting any Russian players into the Hall any time soon.
What makes this news even worse is the knowledge that next year's class of first-time induction eligibles includes a pair of Russian superstars in Pavel Datsyuk and Ilya Kovalchuk. The Hall should really rethink this decision, as it does nothing but hurt the sport.
