Right before the start of the new season, the St. Louis Blues have decided to put newly signed goaltender Georgi Romanov on waivers, where he'll have 24 hours to clear.
The St. Louis Blues appear to be set with the goaltending duo of
Jordan Binnington and
Joel Hofer, but they also decided to add some depth at the position by signing goaltender Georgi Romanov to a 1 year deal.
But first, they are placing him on waivers, and he'll have 24 hours to clear or be otherwise claimed or sent to the American Hockey League.
Romanov is now the 4th goaltender in the last few days to be placed on waivers, with the others being Alexandar Georgiev with the Buffalo Sabres,
Ville Husso with the Anaheim Ducks and
Brandon Bussi with the Florida Panthers.
Only Bussi was claimed (Carolina Hurricanes).
Georgi Romanov: An Undrafted Goalie Beating the Odds
Romanov, who is from Russia, started his career playing with Avto Yekaterinburg and Omskie Yastreby in the Junior Hockey League, which is Russia's top level of junior hockey.
He then played 4 years in Russia's 2nd highest tier League, the Supreme Hockey League.
Soon, he signed a 2 year, entry level contract with the San Jose Sharks, where he got 10 games of NHL experience while also playing for the AHL affiliate San Jose Barracuda.
In 10 career NHL games, Romanov has yet to win a game and has less than stellar stats of a 3.53 GAA and .888 SV%.
The odds are that Romanov will be playing in the AHL this year for the Blues affiliate for the Springfield Thunderbirds and will only see NHL action in the event of an injury to Binnington or Hofer.
