Connor McDavid's extension shocked the NHL world, and now it's been revealed why he was happy to take $12.5 million per season to stay in Edmonton.
Following months of wild speculation about his future, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid put all of that to rest on Monday when he signed a two-year, $12.5 million AAV
extension to stay with the team.
That move gives the team a fantastic chance to win the Stanley Cup at some point over the next three years, and if they can't do that, McDavid will still be in a prime position to cash in with free agency.
One of the big questions around McDavid's decision was 'Does he need to earn more than Leon Draisaitl?', and according to the contract he eventually signed, he clearly doesn't.
Now, it's been revealed by NHL Insider
Elliotte Friedman why McDavid was happy to take less than his star teammate, as he reportedly sees them as equals to the Oilers success in recent years.
McDavid doesn't think, 'Oh, I have to make $2M more than Draisaitl. He sees (Draisaitl) as equally important to their success.'
While most stars may see their co-stars as equals, they'll always try to cash in with big deals, but that's not the case for McDavid, who was happy to take a discount for the team to make sure success comes first.
Given how good McDavid is, no one would blame the star captain for having an ego, but this report from Friedman shows just where his priorities are, and that's getting back to another Stanley Cup Finals in 2026 and potentially cashing in on a victory this time.
