Steve Yzerman's departure from the Detroit Red Wings front office continues to raise questions, and insider Elliotte Friedman is offering a new theory on how it really went down.

On a recent episode of 32 Thoughts, Friedman walked back his earlier assumption that Yzerman chose to step away on his own terms. Instead, he now believes the decision came from ownership, not from Yzerman himself.
Initially I thought that maybe Steve Yzerman resigned. I don't believe that was the case. I believe the Red Wings made the choice to move on.

The comment adds a new layer to a story that already had plenty of intrigue. When Detroit first announced Yzerman was stepping down from his hockey operations role to become a senior advisor to CEO Chris Ilitch, the framing suggested a mutual, low-key transition.
Friedman's latest reporting paints a different picture, one where the organization actively decided it was time for a change.

What It Means for the GM Search

Friedman's theory carries real weight for Detroit's ongoing search for a new head of hockey operations.
He has also reported that the Red Wings are telling candidates they will have full autonomy in the role, without needing to work around Yzerman or seek his input on personnel decisions.
That distinction matters. Friedman noted some potential candidates were hesitant to take the job if Yzerman would still hold influence behind the scenes, given his stature within the organization.
Whether this was a soft firing or a genuine parting of ways, Detroit does not appear likely to confirm the details publicly anytime soon.
For now, Friedman's read stands as one of the more credible glimpses into what actually happened behind closed doors.
