Connor Hellebuyck did not just ask the Winnipeg Jets for a trade. According to insider Scott Billeck, the goaltender made it easy on the front office by giving them options.
Hellebuyck, from what I've heard, was open and willing to work with a number of teams to facilitate a move. He may have a NMC, but he gave Winnipeg options.
The three-time Vezina Trophy winner confirmed his trade request publicly on Thursday through a statement released by agent Ray Petkau, ending months of speculation that dated back to the NHL Draft in June.
Hellebuyck said he privately asked out "several months ago" and wanted clarity established before training camp opens next month.
A Cooperative Approach
Billeck's report suggests Hellebuyck is not digging in with a short list of preferred destinations.
Instead, the netminder appears willing to smooth the process however possible, even with a full no-movement clause protecting his say until next July.
That flexibility matters. Cheveldayoff has been connected to talks involving the Buffalo Sabres, with Hellebuyck reportedly willing to waive his NMC for a move there.
Carolina and New Jersey have also been mentioned as teams monitoring the situation, and a wider list of suitors gives Winnipeg more room to maximize a return.
What Comes Next
Hellebuyck posted a career-low .895 save percentage last season as Winnipeg missed the playoffs, but his track record, including a Hart Trophy and Olympic gold with Team USA, makes him one of the most coveted goaltenders in the league.
With camps opening in roughly three weeks, pressure is building on Cheveldayoff to finalize a deal before the season starts.
