The Calgary Flames were a surprise team in 2024/25, but ahead of the new season, Elliotte Friedman shares his doubts about the team and their goaltending.
Last season was a fun one for the Calgary Flames, and while they missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs, they managed to put up 96 points on the year, missing a spot purely based on a tiebreaker.
Most of that success came on the back of rising star
Dustin Wolf, who put together a career year in his first full NHL season, earning him a massive
long-term extension this off-season.
Can the Flames Win Any Games Without Dustin Wolf?
Unfortunately for the Flames, Wolf can't play all 82 games, and in his backup position, the team moved on from Dan Vladar, with the squad now rolling with
Devin Cooley, who struggled mightily in the pre-season.
That has raised some red flags for NHL Insider
Elliotte Friedman, who has brought up that backup position as a spot that takes away plenty of confidence for this Flames squad.
"I'm concerned about the 20-25 games Dustin Wolf won't play in Calgary. I was surprised the Flames didn't claim any of the available goalies on waivers Monday"
There's plenty of other issues in Calgary too, with the team lacking a major gamebreaker, and whether they like it or not, they'll need to head towards a rebuild to get that type of player.
Ultimately, Wolf will give the Flames a chance to win every time he takes the ice, but with no proven backup, this may end up being Calgary's achilles heel in 2025/26.
