The Maple Leafs fell 5-2 to the Flames in Calgary on Monday night as Matvei Gridin scored twice, even with Leafs fans filling much of the Saddledome.
Toronto got the loud crowd it wanted in Calgary on Monday night, but it did not get the win.
The Flames beat the Maple Leafs 5-2 at the Scotiabank Saddledome, and a sea of blue and white in the lower bowl could not change the outcome.
Go Leafs Go chants rained down early, and for stretches it sounded like Toronto was the home team.
The Open Ice account on X captured the scene as the visiting fans took over the building.
That kind of support does not show up on a scoresheet, but it was impossible to miss.
Gridin powers the Flames
Calgary built a 2-0 lead after the first period and carried a 3-1 edge into the third.
Matvei Gridin was the difference, scoring twice, including a power play goal, and he was named the first star.
One of his goals stood as the game winner, and Mikael Backlund also scored for Calgary.
William Nylander scored for Toronto, and the Leafs pulled within a goal in the third.
That was as close as it got.
Empty nets and penalties
Calgary added two empty net goals late, one from Joel Farabee, to put it away.
Toronto took eight penalties to Calgary's five, including two minors for Auston Matthews, and the Flames went 1 for 5 on the power play while the Leafs went 0 for 2.
Each team also had a fighting major, and the Flames outshot the Leafs 34-28.
The road trip continues Wednesday night in Seattle, with a Saturday stop in Vancouver after that.
Calgary showed Toronto fans will travel, but the team still has to hand them a win.
