Ottawa Senators fans made their feelings known during Brady Tkachuk's emotional return to Canadian Tire Centre, and the proof landed on the ice.

According to Ian Mendes, 37 jerseys were thrown over the boards on Wednesday night, a loud reminder of how raw emotions remain after the former captain's offseason move to the Florida Panthers.
Tkachuk was traded to Florida on June 21 in exchange for three first-round picks, and Senators general manager Steve Staios said the forward had asked to be moved.
Tkachuk saw it coming. The day before, he said on his Wingmen podcast that every jersey tossed onto the ice would go to the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa.
He even framed it as a possible new tribute, as long as the sweaters helped a good cause, though he made clear he did not recommend the stunt.

Damage Limits the Donation Plan

The plan has hit a snag. Mendes reports that many of the 37 jerseys cannot be donated because they were damaged.
Since the goal was to hand the sweaters over to a children's charity, only items in usable condition can make the trip, and the damaged ones fall short.
It is an awkward twist for a night that was supposed to turn frustration into something positive. Fans hoping to send a message ended up shrinking the number of jerseys that can actually help kids in the community.

Tkachuk's Gesture Still Carries Weight

Even so, the idea behind the plan deserves credit. Tkachuk could have ignored the protest entirely. Instead, he tried to flip it into support for a local organization he praised.
Whatever number of jerseys reaches the club, the effort shows he still cares about the city where he spent eight seasons, five of them as captain.
The Panthers return to Canadian Tire Centre on March 18, 2027, so fans will get another chance to make noise.
If they want to toss jerseys again, the lesson is clear: any sweater headed for a good cause needs to survive the landing.
