Maple Leafs reportedly shopping Morgan Rielly amid trade talks

The Toronto Maple Leafs may have to part with a franchise fixture to land the blueline help they are chasing.
Sportsnet insider Nick Kypreos believes Morgan Rielly could be the name that helps the numbers add up in a bigger deal.
If the Leafs do add a defenceman, [Morgan Rielly] could be the piece included to make the money work
Why the Cap Math Points to Rielly
Rielly carries a $7.5 million cap hit through the 2029-30 season, a heavy number for a defenceman who produced 36 points last year. Shipping that salary out would give Chayka's front office room to absorb a larger contract coming back.
Toronto has reportedly been dangling its Colorado first-round pick and young assets, but attaching an outgoing salary is often what turns talks into a finished trade.
The Leafs have made no secret of their appetite for a big swing on defence. Their pursuit of Simon Edvinsson reportedly hit a wall, which suggests Toronto may need to get creative with whoever they target next.
The Hurdles Still Standing
Rielly holds a no-movement clause, giving him the final say on any destination. He has reportedly sent Toronto a list weighted toward Western Conference clubs, which narrows the number of teams that can realistically fit his salary.
He is also coming off a rough season, finishing with a minus-18 rating, so any suitor will weigh his price tag carefully.
Still, the idea carries weight because of who he is. Rielly, drafted fifth overall in 2012, is the longest-tenured Leaf and has spent all 13 seasons in Toronto.
He ranks second among franchise defencemen in points, so moving him would close a major chapter for the organization.
For now, nothing is imminent, and Toronto still needs a trade partner willing to send back a quality defender.
But if Chayka lands a target whose salary demands creativity, expect Rielly's name to surface first. Leafs fans should keep a close eye on the market as the season unfolds, because this storyline is far from finished.
