The eye's of the World are currently on what is going down in Europe right now and more specifically the Ukraine. This has created a lot of social media attention, with many people looking for answers from prominent members of society. For NHL fans and media, that person just happens to be the Washington Capitals' captain Alexander Ovechkin.
Most of the time players are happy to leave their political views outside of their media availability, but in cases like this, that just isn't possible. Ovechkin in the past has been a staunch supporter of Russian President, Vladimir Putin. Because of that ahead of the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals game, the media made special requests to speak with Ovechkin.
Requests, which the Capitals denied.
The Capitals intention was to keep Ovechkin, and by proxy his family safe. The rapidly intensifying situation in the Ukraine is not something that should be taken lightly. In Ovi's case as well, he still has family living in Russia. His wife, children and parents, all remain in Russia at this time. In an interest of safety the Capitals plans are to keep the Russian Star away from a microphone where possible.
This situation will continue to intensify, but hopefully we will get some clarity in the near future.
