New Jersey Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe has weighed in on the unfortunate non-hockey-related injury suffered by top team forward Jack Hughes that will keep him out of the lineup for at least eight weeks.
It was a brutal blow for the New Jersey Devils, who announced that top forward Jack Hughes will not be able to play for at least the next eight weeks after undergoing finger surgery.
The surgery was necessitated by what the team called a "freak accident" that happened to Hughes during a team dinner in Chicago on Thursday.
Head coach Sheldon Keefe didn't go into details on how exactly Hughes was hurt, but he said he and the team are satisfied that whatever happened was a freak accident that could have happened to anyone.
I think just out of respect to the situation and it doesn't serve anyone to dig too much into the details of what happened other than to say that from our end, we're satisfied that it was a freak accident that could have happened to anyone. We talked to the players who were there, the members of the training equipment staff that were there as well. Very unfortunate situation, more bad luck than anything and we're satisfied with that and we'll make sure what we can to get Jack better.
Hughes has experienced multiple injuries during his NHL career, including one last year that required surgery and kept him out for New Jersey's final few games of the season and their entire ECQF series against the divisional foe Carolina Hurricanes.
Hughes has not appeared in more than 78 games since 2022-23; he's been limited to 62 games in each of the last two years.
He was also limited to 61 games in his rookie year, and just 49 games in 2021-22.
