Per a report from NHL analyst Nick Kypreos, the divisional foes Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens nearly combined for a blockbuster trade at the deadline involving Matthew Knies.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens don't often do business together, but there was a chance that a major move was nearly made.
Per a report from NHL analyst Nick Kypreos, the Maple Leafs and Canadiens nearly pulled off a stunner that would have involved forward Matthew Knies.
I'm just telling you what I'm hearing, there was a sense that in at least my inner-world, that the deal that he was working on was with the Toronto Maple Leafs....this is where we get to spitball now....I think Elliotte was the first to report Matthew Knies' name out there, I also heard it and put him on my Trade Board at the end of the week. And there is a sense out there that perhaps there was something brewing around that type of guy. - Nick Kypreos
Knies is seen as one of the young building blocks for the Maple Leafs, and they would have had to receive a major package from the Habs in return for him if they were to move him.
So far this year, Knies has 51 points (16G, 35A) in 61 games played.
The Maple Leafs, who aren't likely to make the playoffs, have even allegedly been reported to be considering a trade of Auston Matthews at some point, which would be nothing short of a stunner for the NHL.

The Canadiens Nearly Pulled Off A Major Move At The Deadline

There were also other rumours swirling around the Canadiens and their chances of pulling off a move.
Per NHL analyst David Pagnotta, the Habs were close to trading for a right-handed defenseman before the deal fell through.
David Pagnotta: The Habs were very very close to getting a defenseman, a right shot; it was like right at the finish line...the other team pulled back right at the last minute - Hello Hockey (3/7)

Regardless, the Habs are likely heading back to the playoffs this year, while the Maple Leafs are set to miss for the first time since 2016.
