Los Angeles Kings and Buffalo Sabres pull off player swap days after trade deadline

The Los Angeles Kings and head coach Jim Hiller have orchestrated a rare AHL prospect swap, sending Kaleb Lawrence to Rochester for Nikita Novikov.
The NHL trade deadline has passed, but front offices are still finding highly creative ways to retool their developmental depth charts.
Instead of executing a traditional trade with standard restrictions, this transaction is an official mutual loan agreement between the Kings and the Buffalo Sabres organizations.
Novikov instantly upgrades the blue line for the Ontario Reign down the stretch. The 22-year-old Russian defender brings serious size to the defensive corps, stepping onto the ice at an imposing 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds.
He has already posted 18 points-including 12 assists-in 50 games this season for Rochester, consistently anchoring the back end with a highly reliable +6 rating.
His heavy physical style and 44 penalty minutes prove he will not back down during grueling board battles in the dirty areas of the ice.
A Much-Needed Reset for Kaleb Lawrence
Going the exact opposite direction, Lawrence gets a clean slate and fresh opportunity in the Sabres development system.
The towering 6-foot-7 winger never quite found a permanent role in the crowded California prospect pool.
Over his professional career, the offensive output has simply stalled out.
With just six goals and 11 total points across 40 career AHL appearances, the 23-year-old desperately needed a dramatic change of scenery to jumpstart his confidence and find his game.
Rochester provides a less congested bottom-six environment for him to establish a heavy forecheck and execute controlled entries.
Because these are official AHL loans, neither player actually changes their underlying NHL draft rights ahead of the looming summer offseason.
The Reign are currently gearing up for a massive playoff run in the highly competitive Pacific Division, and the management group clearly recognized a glaring need for immediate defensive reinforcements.
Adding a sturdy, shutdown defender like Novikov gives Ontario exactly the type of crisp passing and aggressive gap control required to win tight hockey games.
The front offices will undoubtedly monitor this temporary handshake deal to see if it blossoms into a permanent, rights-swapping trade by July.
