A Separation From Chicago

The speculation surrounding former Chicago Blackhawks captain and three-time Stanley Cup champion, Jonathan Toews, has been a prominent storyline this summer. While some believed that Toews might have returned if the Hawks had reserved a spot for him, the organization is shifting towards a full rebuild resulting in the decision not to bring back their esteemed captain, rendering him an unrestricted free agent.

A Potential Homecoming?

The Toews saga has remained relatively low-key during the summer months. Although there was some initial anticipation that he might ink a short-term contract with his hometown team, the Winnipeg Jets, no such agreement has been materialized. As time passes, the likelihood of this scenario appears to diminish.

The Latest Scoop

In the latest installment of the DFO Rundown, NHL Insider Frank Seravalli disclosed that he's picked up on "rumblings" suggesting that Toews, who is 35 years old, could be contemplating retirement this summer. However, Seravalli remains uncertain about the finality of this decision. He raised questions about what Toews might feel come October or November, implying that the situation remains unresolved.

Toews has quite the resume, having secured three Stanley Cups, a Selke Trophy (2012-13), a Conn Smythe Trophy (2009-10), and a Mark Messier Leadership Award (2014-15). His entire 15-year NHL journey has been with the Chicago Blackhawks, who drafted him third overall in 2006. The concern over his health arises from his battle with CIRS (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome) over the past few years. This immune disorder has taken a toll on his well-being, resulting in fatigue and health struggles, notably throughout the 2020-21 season, which he sat out entirely. Toews did manage to make a comeback in the 2021-22 season, participating in 71 games and accumulating 37 points.

Most recently, Toews showcased his prowess in 53 games, recording 15 goals and 16 assists for a total of 31 points in the 2022-23 season, even amidst the challenges faced by a struggling Blackhawks team. If Toews elects to continue his NHL journey, it's reasonable to anticipate that he won't encounter significant obstacles in finding a new team for the upcoming season, potentially on a short-term "prove it" type deal.
