In case you missed it WNBA Star, Brittney Griner was arrested in Russia back in February for having drug paraphernalia in her possession at a Russian Airport.
Griner was detained and was held in custody in a Russian Prison since then. Her trial has wrapped up and unfortunately for her she's been sentenced to nine years in a Russian Prison.
However, The United States Government is trying to work on doing a prisoner swap, but that has yet to completed.
During sentencing, Judge Anna Sotnikova said:
"she had found that Griner intentionally broke the law. Prosecutors had asked for a 9-year sentence."
Sotnikova also said:
"The time Griner has served in custody since her arrest in February would count toward the sentence.'
WNBA & NBA Commissioners Cathy Engelbert and Adam Silver made a joint statement about the verdict, calling it ''unjustified and unfortunate.''
The WNBA and NBA's commitment to her safe return has not wavered and it is our hope that we are near the end of this process of finally bringing BG home to the United States
