Scott Laughton was a huge deadline pickup for Toronto a year ago, but now he's suffered a brutal injury right before the 2025/26 NHL season.
Coming into the 2025/26 NHL season, the Toronto Maple Leafs have a major surplus of forwards, giving Craig Berube and Brad Treliving some massive decisions to make heading into the new campaign.
While there's been
trade rumours around the likes of Nick Robertson, as of yet, the team haven't made a significant move, but this week, it appears as though one was made for them.
Scott Laughton Injured Days Before Maple Leafs Opening Night
After a solid pre-season, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced on social media that veteran forward Scott Laughton has suffered an injury to the lower body, with the team officially designating him as week-to-week.
It's unclear exactly what the injury is, but given what Toronto gave up to land Laughton at the deadline a year ago, it's safe to say that he was set up to be a key part of their forward group in 2025/26.
After arriving in Toronto, Laughton tallied 2 goals and 4 points through 20 games played, and while he's not yet had the production they would have hoped, a full off-season and training camp with the team was hopefully going to help him turn that around.
Ultimately, it's unclear just how long Laughton will be out for, and if Toronto can get off to a hot start without him, it's uncertain what his role on the team will be when he gets back, but for right now, this is one less roster and lineup decision that the team need to make ahead of their season opener with the Montreal Canadiens.
