The Toronto Maple Leafs are not finished reshaping their roster, and Elliotte Friedman says the next target is obvious.

According to the veteran insider, management is hunting for a significant addition on the back end, and it does not sound like a minor tweak.
I do think they are looking to see what kind of a big swing they can take on the blueline
That fits the pattern of an aggressive few weeks in Toronto. The Leafs sent Matthew Knies to Columbus for Kirill Marchenko, then signed the forward to a six-year extension.
Adding another high-impact piece would show the club is willing to keep pushing its chips in.
For a club that opened the season with questions at several spots, the appetite for a bold move is understandable.
Fans have watched the roster change quickly, and the pressure to show that the new direction is working only grows with every game.

Why the Back End Matters

Toronto has already dealt with goaltending trouble, enough that Artur Akhtyamov was recalled. A true difference-maker on defense would help protect the crease and give the group a steadier foundation.
Several defensemen are already in the rumor mill. Quinn Hughes remains unsigned in Minnesota, Simon Edvinsson has reportedly said he prefers a trade out of Detroit, and Calgary's Zach Whitecloud has been tied to Toronto. Friedman has also relayed a theory linking Erik Karlsson to the Leafs.

What a Big Swing Could Cost

Swings of this size rarely come cheap. Clubs holding elite blueliners will demand young talent and premium picks, and Toronto has already shown it will part with a core forward.
Salary cap space and no-trade clauses add another layer, since players with trade protection can influence where they land. The challenge is finding a deal that improves the roster now without gutting what is left.
The wording leaves the target wide open, which only adds intrigue. With so many defensemen potentially available, Toronto has options, and the next few weeks could reshape the blueline for good.
