ESPN's John Buccigross says a Red Wings trade is coming within 7 to 10 days, and he confirmed it means Dylan Larkin. Detroit has not made a deal yet.
The Detroit Red Wings may finally be ready to move Dylan Larkin.
ESPN's John Buccigross said on the Frankly Hockey podcast that information he received the night before tells him a Detroit trade will happen within seven to 10 days.
John Buccigross: "I think there's gonna be a trade within 7 to 10 days in Detroit; I got a little bit of information last night that tells me that we're gonna see a trade..."
Frank Seravalli: "It has to be Dylan Larkin then right...?"
Buccigross: "Yeah, Larkin."
Frank Seravalli: "It has to be Dylan Larkin then right...?"
Buccigross: "Yeah, Larkin."
Buccigross confirmed it is Larkin
Host Frank Seravalli asked if that meant Larkin, and Buccigross said yes.
He did not name a destination or share more detail, only hinting that lineup changes point toward a move.
Until a deal is official, this stays a report and nothing more.
Larkin asked for a trade in early June after Detroit missed the playoffs for a 10th straight season.
The 30-year-old lost the captaincy before training camp.
He still has five years left on an eight-year, $69.6 million contract with an $8.7 million cap hit, and his full no-trade clause means he controls where he goes.
Why a deal has been hard to find
His approved list began with three teams and has grown to about 10 contenders, but most of them do not have the assets Detroit wants.
TSN's Darren Dreger reported that the Red Wings are seeking two A-quality prospects, an NHL-ready top-nine forward and a first-round pick.
Minnesota has been viewed as his preferred landing spot.
Shawn Horcoff has run the team as interim general manager since September, after Steve Yzerman stepped down in July.
Detroit opened the season 3-3-2, and Larkin has one goal and two assists in six games.
Detroit now has a tricky balance to strike.
Holding out for the perfect offer could drag this into the middle of the season, while a quick deal might mean settling for less than the front office wants.
The next week and a half should show which way the Red Wings will lean.
