Sharks emerge in Connor Hellebuyck trade talks, with young goalie at the center of a potential deal

Connor Hellebuyck's trade request from the Winnipeg Jets has been public for days now, and the San Jose Sharks are quietly becoming one of the more interesting fits in the league.

It's not the obvious pairing at first glance, but once you look at the numbers, the idea starts to make a lot more sense.

Hellebuyck carries an $8.5 million cap hit through 2030-31 and still holds a full no-trade clause this year, meaning he gets a real say in where he lands.

San Jose has emerged as a legitimate landing spot, with Yaroslav Askarov frequently mentioned as the centerpiece of any return package heading back to Winnipeg.

The Sharks have real playoff aspirations this season around a young core that includes Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith.

Trading for an established three time Vezina winner could push San Jose from hopeful to genuine threat in a stacked Pacific Division.

But there's a catch. San Jose is currently projected to have only around $3.34 million in cap space.

Swapping Askarov's $2 million hit for Hellebuyck's $8.5 million would leave the Sharks roughly $3.16 million short under current projections, meaning a straight one for one swap simply doesn't work without another corresponding move.

A realistic offer likely starts with Askarov plus a protected first round pick, and even then Winnipeg may need to retain salary to make the cap math work.

Whether Mike Grier pays that price for a 33 year old goalie remains the biggest question in this rumor.

Hellebuyck is still just five wins away from 350 for his career and was rated by NHL Network as one of the league's top goalies entering this season, so his down year in 2025-26 hasn't scared teams off.

San Jose fans should expect this speculation to keep building right up until camp opens.
