Toronto Maple Leafs organization reunites with former forward and offers PTO

The Toronto Marlies have added a familiar face to their training camp roster, signing forward Matthew Barbolini to a professional tryout agreement.

The move comes just days before camp opens and gives the 26 year old another shot at cracking the lineup after a productive regular season a year ago.

Barbolini put together a solid campaign in 2025-26, appearing in 62 games and racking up nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points, though he finished with a minus-nine rating.

His season ended early though, as an upper body injury suffered on April 19 in the Marlies' final regular season game kept him sidelined for the entire Calder Cup playoff run, which had to sting after the kind of year he was putting together.

This is not new territory for Barbolini and the Marlies.

He first signed with Toronto on a professional tryout back in 2023-24 after wrapping up four seasons at Miami University, where he racked up 25 points across just 31 games in his senior year and earned a Hobey Baker Award nomination for it.

That tryout turned into a two year contract that March, and since then he has suited up in 122 games as a Marlie, contributing 13 goals and 29 assists for 42 points across parts of three seasons.

At six foot two and 204 pounds, his size has always been part of what makes him an intriguing depth piece up front.

Barbolini is not the only addition to the roster this week either.

Reese Johnson signed a two year deal after a solid season that included a run through 15 playoff games, while goaltender prospect Timofei Obvintsev and forward Jackson Kunz also joined the organization on new contracts.

With camp approaching fast, Toronto is clearly stocking up on depth before roster battles begin in earnest and coaches start sorting out who makes the opening night lineup.
