The NHL has actively been trying to take the game global in recent years, and now, we know that the Penguins will be playing overseas in the 2025/26 season.
The NHL's audience is one of the most widespread in sports, and in recent times, the league have pushed hard to take games overseas, with 13 Global Series taking place since 2019 in places such as Berlin, Stockholm, Prague and Munich.
The latest was the Prague and Tampere series that took place last season, and now, a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins has leaked that their organization will be next, taking games to Sweden in the 2025/26 season.
According to that source, details are set to be announced in the next week, with teases already coming on social media over the last few days as the league continues what has been a successful series thus far.
When asked about potentially playing in his home country, star forward
Rickard Rakell was absolutely ecstatic, and with other Swedes on the team too, if the right opponent is picked this will be a fantastic occasion.
It becomes a big thing for us, just to have a chance to play in your home country or play in front of your youth team, old coaches you had growing up. To have a chance to have family and friends come and see you and your teammates play, it's a pretty special thing.
It's unclear if the NHL will 100% continue to do this every year, but at this point in time every single event appears to be successful, and with so many players from Europe in the league, it makes complete sense moving forward, so expect to hear more details on this one very, very soon.
