Montreal Canadiens announce new logo for the 2026-27 season

The team introduced a full-color, 3D-styled logo last year. However, this year, they have changed it to something simpler. Instead of the entire circle being colored in red, it will be white.

That said, the design of the logo will keep a 3D look of sorts.

Last season, instead of simply repainting the old crest, the Canadiens filled the entire face-off circle in red, giving the ice a striking pop from every camera angle and broadcast shot.

The number 1909 marks the year the franchise was founded, a nod to more than a century of history. "Canadiens de Montréal" appears in French across the design, underscoring the team's Quebec roots and the province's official language.

Around the edge, 24 grooves referenced the franchise's record 24 Stanley Cup championships, with the embossed circle drawing inspiration from an overhead view of the Cup itself.

However, the team has done away with 2025-26 design. It is unclear why they would want to make that kind of change, but they have. Overall, it proves the Canadiens are always evolving, for better or for worse.

At the time, owner Geoff Molson pushed for the refresh, tasking longtime team art director Antonin Brault Guilleaume with the project, according to the Montreal Gazette's Stu Cowan.

For a franchise as tradition-bound as the Canadiens, touching the jersey or primary logo is close to untouchable, and there would likely be backlash in the city if either changed.

Center ice offers a rare canvas to modernize the brand without altering anything fans consider sacred.

This marks just the third center-ice change in nearly 30 years. From 1996 through 2018, the Bell Centre featured two smaller logos at center ice before the team consolidated to one oversized crest for the 2018-19 season.
