The New York Rangers are looking to close the book on the Carolina Hurricanes season tonight. During the game, their Captain Jacob Trouba was caught trying to make a dirty and dangerous hit on Evgeny Kuznetsov.

Earlier this week during game two against the Rangers, Marty Necas gathered the puck along the boards as he entered the Rangers zone in transition, looking to cutback towards the middle of the ice. Luckily, he saw Trouba coming just in time to dodge his hit attempt. The Rangers captain flew over the top of him and into the boards, appearing to deliberately try and target Necas's head with his elbow on the flyover.

Jacob Trouba is REALLY lucky that his left elbow flying out didn't make contact with anything. Otherwise we would be having lots of discussions about this hit and not about how funny it looks that he missed.

The reaction from fans was largely positive, specifically because Trouba missed the hit. Many fans were glad to see the Rangers captain, who has a questionable reputation at best, get the worse of a collision he started.

I love that the hit failed and instead he crumpled like an accordion head first into the glass. Almost cartoon like.

Other fans pointed out that Trouba could easily have been looking at a major penalty and a lengthy suspension if he actually landed the hit. It certainly appeared to be a 'chicken-wing' style elbow, a type of hit the NHL has cracked down on especially hard in recent years.

He better be glad he actually didn't land that elbow. That would've been a lengthy suspension.

Tonight, Evgeny Kuznetsov scored the opening goal of the game, and defending him was Trouba. Trouba can be seen trying to elbow Kuznetsov after he got his shot off and past Trouba and Igor Shesterkin.

Trouba has largely been a negative impact for the Rangers in the playoffs so far. They remain perfect in the playoffs despite his presence in the lineup, not because of it. This has lead to some fans suggesting that the team move on from him in the offseason.

The Rangers need to find a way out from Jacob Trouba this offseason #NYR

At this point, it is not clear whether or not that will happen, but knowing the Rangers, we can probably expect to see Trouba back next season, regardless of how the rest of the playoffs play out.
