Elliotte Friedman says Patrick Roy and Mathieu Darche went face-to-face with Brayden Schenn before the New York Islanders trade, and NHL tampering chatter is sparked.

Schenn is a veteran center under contract at a $6.5 million cap hit through 2027-28, with a 15-team modified no-trade clause, so any 'convince him' meeting hits a nerve.
The Islanders still paid the price, sending Jonathan Drouin, goalie prospect Marcus Gidlöf, plus a 2026 first and third to the St. Louis Blues.
Gidlöf is 20, drafted in 2024, fifth round, by the Islanders, and has shown a lot of potential in the last two years.
Schenn's on-ice 'why' is simple, New York wanted a hard middle that can survive playoff-style shifts and protect leads.
Now the ugly question is timing. If that pitch happened before St. Louis granted permission, it looks like a line got crossed.
If it happened after a framework was in place, it is just modern deadline reality, uncomfortable, but common.
Schenn has 12-16-28 in 61 games, so this is not about points.
It's about winning a draw, taking a hit, and getting the puck to the right place when the game gets tight.

Brayden Schenn forces New York Islanders to answer questions

Islanders fans can love the aggression and still hate the optics, because the last thing this team needs is the league turning it into a circus.
Roy can slot Schenn into matchup minutes, then free Bo Horvat for more offense and cleaner touches.
Schenn already debuted during this road swing, and Tuesday in St. Louis will feel like a spotlight shift, not just another game.
If New York keeps stacking wins, the noise fades. If they stumble, that 'face-to-face' line is going to stick all summer.
