Per a new report from Canadiens analyst Arpon Basu, the Habs were interested in making a deal at the trade deadline before it eventually fell through.

There were multiple deals for yesterday's trade deadline, and multiple new players in new locations.
But one team that didn't make any major moves despite being rumoured to multiple players was the Montreal Canadiens. They were linked to players like Robert Thomas and Nazem Kadri; Thomas was not traded by the St. Louis Blues, while Kadri was traded from the Flames back to the Colorado Avalanche, where he won a Stanley Cup in 2022.
Per a new report from Canadiens analyst Arpon Basu, GM Kent Hughes was working on a "team building deal" and was naturally disappointed when things did not work out for the deal to go through.
Hughes refused to elaborate on what that deal might have been because he feels the Canadiens can revisit it in the summer, but that, in and of itself, reveals a lot about the deal.

It reveals it was a team-building deal, not a team-finishing one, and while Hughes was clearly disappointed at being unable to get it done in time to help this year's team, he also made it clear this year's team is not the priority.

There will be a huge guessing game as to what this mystery trade was, and there is no doubt it is a source of great curiosity, but the team-building nature of the deal suggests Canadiens management has not lost the plot. - Arpon Basu

An Unnamed Player Was Willing To Waive His NTC To Join The Habs

During his press conference yesterday, Hughes revealed that there was a player that he declined to name that was willing to move his NMC to join the Habs, but the deal didn't work out.
There were a couple of calls today where we were on the No-Trade List. But it was interesting, the feedback was maybe we had been on from a prior time and they were willing to waive (for Montreal) if a deal came through.

I think there's a recognition around the league that we're heading in the right direction. We gotta keep moving the ball forward to get to where we want to be. - Kent Hughes

The Canadiens believe that they are only going to get better from here on out.
