The Calgary Flames are acquiring Simon Nemec from the New Jersey Devils, per Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.
Friedman confirmed the full package immediately after. Calgary sends a 2026 New York Rangers second-round pick, a 2027 Vegas Golden Knights first (top-10 protected), a 2028 Colorado Avalanche first (top-10 protected), and defensive prospect Etienne Morin to land Nemec and forward Maxim Tsyplakov.
Nemec finished last season with 26 points in 68 games for the New Jersey Devils, including 11 goals.
The 2022 second-overall pick arrives in Calgary after his most productive NHL season.
What Sunny Mehta actually built here
New Jersey Devils GM Sunny Mehta extracted a package that deserves its own headline. He received two protected first-round picks from two separate organizations - Vegas 2027 and Colorado 2028, both top-10 protected - plus a current-year second-round pick and a defensive prospect.
All of that came back for a restricted free agent who posted the worst per-60 goal differential among NHL defensemen over the past two seasons.
Mehta did not just move an uncertain asset - he converted one complicated player into four pieces across three different organizations.
Why Calgary's right side just got complicated
Flames GM Craig Conroy already has Zayne Parekh and Hunter Brzustewicz occupying the right side of his blue line.
Nemec does not arrive to a clear opening - he arrives to a competition.
The 2027 Vegas first-round pick also carries a history worth noting. Calgary received that exact pick from the Vegas Golden Knights when they traded Rasmus Andersson earlier this season, patiently building capital through the rebuild.
Conroy has now deployed that capital in a single transaction. If Nemec reaches his ceiling, this price looks reasonable.
If he stagnates, the Flames surrendered their pipeline before it paid a single return.
