Patrick Roy's Fate as Islanders Head Coach Confirmed by New General Manager Mathieu Darche
Incoming New York Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche has announced that the club will be keeping Patrick Roy as head coach despite missing the playoffs this year.
The New York Islanders missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs in what was Patrick Roy's first full year behind the bench; they went 35-35-12.
The Islanders have moved on from now-former general manager and president of hockey operations Lou Lamoriello, and in his place have hired former Tampa Bay Lightning director of hockey operations Mathieu Darche.
While there was speculation
regarding the job security of Roy under Darche, he put those rumors to rest. Darche announced earlier today that Roy would be back next year as Islanders head coach.
However, Roy's staff will look different next year; Darche announced that assistant coaches John MacLean and Tommy Albelin will not return.
Roy replaced the fired Lane Lambert midway through last season and did qualify for the postseason, but they were defeated by the Carolina Hurricanes in the opening round.
He was hired by the club after he had previously led the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League to the 2023 Memorial Cup championship. Additionally, Roy won the Jack Adams Trophy as the NHL's best head coach after winning 52 games in 2013-14 with the Colorado Avalanche.
The Islanders are expected to make changes during the summer, which will include their opportunity to use the 1st overall pick in the upcoming 2025 NHL Entry Draft. They also have approximately $30 million worth of salary cap space to utilize at their disposal.
The Draft will take place from June 27-28 in Los Angeles.
