Braeden Cootes wore the captain's C for Canada at the 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase, and the December version of that decision may not be Hockey Canada's.

The Vancouver Canucks own that call, and the new CHL-NHL loan rules are what make it complicated.
Cootes led Canada out for Wednesday's 5-3 loss to Sweden in Windsor, with Brady Martin and Carson Carels wearing A's.
Misha Donskov, who handed out those letters, is also the head coach for the 2027 World Juniors in Edmonton and Red Deer. That continuity matters, because summer staffs and December staffs have not always been the same people.

Why Vancouver holds the deciding vote

The 2026-27 season is the first in which a 19-year-old CHL first-round pick can be loaned to the American Hockey League instead of returned to junior. Cootes was flagged in early reporting as one of the obvious test cases, alongside Ben Kindel and Radim Mrtka.
If he sticks in Vancouver's lineup, NHL clubs almost never release players for the World Juniors, and the C goes elsewhere. If he opens in Abbotsford, an AHL loan is routine, and Edmonton stays live.

He has lost a captaincy to a transaction before

This is not hypothetical for him.
Cootes captained the Seattle Thunderbirds for two seasons before a January trade moved him to the Prince Albert Raiders.
That letter disappeared because of a roster decision made above him, not because of anything he did on the ice. The same structure applies now, only with a national team crest attached.
He captained Canada to under-18 gold in 2025 and scored twice at the 2026 World Juniors, where Canada took bronze in Minnesota.
Sherwood Park sits about 10 miles from Rogers Place. None of that settles anything, though.
The most important date for Canada's 2027 captaincy is not in December.
It is whenever Ryan Johnson decides where Cootes starts the season.

Should the Canucks send Cootes to Abbotsford so he can captain Canada in Edmonton?
