Maple Leafs trade first-line star for Nikita Kucherov in blockbuster trade proposal

The Lightning insist they have no plans to move their captain, but a hypothetical deal is worth exploring. Here is a mock trade that could work for both sides.

Tampa Bay Lightning receive: Kirill Marchenko, Ben Danford, Dakota Joshua and a 2027 first-round pick. Toronto Maple Leafs receive: Nikita Kucherov.

Kucherov is in the final year of an eight-year, $76 million contract with a $9.5 million cap hit, and he has reportedly told the club he will not re-sign. Losing a Hart Trophy winner for nothing next summer is a nightmare scenario.

This package gives general manager Julien BriseBois a proven scoring winger in Marchenko, a first-round defence prospect in Danford, a physical forward in Joshua and a valuable pick.

Marchenko is week-to-week with a lower-body injury, but he arrived in Toronto this offseason as a legitimate top-six scorer. Joshua, 30, was recalled from a conditioning stint on October 28 after missing the start of the season. Danford, the 31st pick in 2024, is still developing in the minors.

For Toronto, the move clears salary and brings in a superstar. The Leafs have little cap space for 2027, so sending out Joshua's $3.25 million hit and Marchenko's salary is essential.

Kucherov would give Auston Matthews and William Nylander an elite playmaker, and Toronto is reportedly one of two destinations he would consider.

The price is steep for Tampa Bay, which would be giving up a franchise icon, and the Lightning have stated they have no intention of trading him. Kucherov also holds a modified no-trade clause with a 10-team list, so Toronto would need to be on it.

Still, with his future tied to contract talks and reports of a $20 million ask, a deal like this may become the Lightning's best way to recoup value. Toronto would then face the real question of paying him on a new contract.
