The Detroit Red Wings are not shopping for a luxury top-six forward. They are pricing Dylan Larkin's replacement.
The Fourth Period reported this week that Detroit continues to hunt for another top-six forward before training camp.
Read alongside the Larkin file, that is not an addition, it is a precondition.
Steve Yzerman said after the June draft that he could make no guarantees on the request, pointing to the five years left on his captain's contract.
Detroit finished 41-31-10 and missed the playoffs for a tenth straight season, so this is replacement work, not upgrade shopping.
The Robertson rejection reveals the real criterion
Per MLive's Ansar Khan, Detroit asked the Dallas Stars for Wyatt Johnston and was offered Jason Robertson instead.
The Red Wings passed because Robertson had filed for arbitration with no long-term guarantee.
That refusal is the tell. Detroit's requirement is not simply a good forward, it is a good forward under long-term contractual control.
Minnesota's reported package built around Danila Yurov, Charlie Stramel and picks fails the same test. Futures do not replace 30 goals in October.
A caretaker is setting the price for his successor
Yzerman stepped down on July 15 and now advises Chris Ilitch while running day-to-day business until a new head of hockey operations is hired.
No candidate has been confirmed, and Jeff Marek said this week that Jim Rutherford is not part of the process.
So the four clubs Larkin has approved - Florida, Minnesota, Vegas and Dallas - are negotiating against a standard set by an executive who will not be there to defend it.
That is why nothing moves. Detroit's asking price is a roster player, the interested teams keep offering prospects, and the executive who could change the terms has not been hired.
Larkin turns 30 today with a full no-movement clause and every reason to wait.
