Sandis Vilmanis laid a brutal hit on Boston's Charlie McAvoy, but despite plenty of backlash, he'll suffer no consequences for the play.
The Florida Panthers and Boston Bruins have built up quite the rivalry in recent times, and in their latest matchup, to the surprise of no one, there was plenty of animosity between the two Atlantic Division teams.
That all came to a head when rookie forward Sandis Vilmanis laid out a brutal hit on veteran defenseman Charlie McAvoy, with many fans taking to social media to call for the NHL to suspend the 22-year old forward.
NHL DoPS reveal their discipline for Sandis Vilmanis
McAvoy, one of the toughest players in the National Hockey League, had to leave the ice following the open ice hit, and while he's not sustained long-term injuries, the expectation was that Vilmanis would hear from the NHL's Department of Player Safety.
However, a report has now revealed that there will be no further punishment for the Panthers rookie, despite the incredibly dangerous hit and the fact that McAvoy had to leave the ice as a result.
This comes after a season in which no Panther has been truly punished for their actions on the ice, with fans all over social media believing that this team will always get the benefit of the doubt in whatever scenario it is.
Ultimately, Vilmanis is a 13 game rookie that has no prior incidents on the ice, so of course that needs to be taken into consideration, but given how brutal the hit was, this is certainly yet another tough look for the NHL.
