Oilers' biggest trade today may have not been Tristan Jarry: Analytics show possible steal in Spencer Stastney
The Oilers made two massive trades on Friday, and while many focus on the Tristan Jarry deal, it may be the other that was their best move of the day.
The Edmonton Oilers have been seeking some upgrades ever since the 2025/26 season began, and on Friday, they finally made the long awaited trades that their fans have been begging for.
In two separate deals, the Oilers landed veteran goaltender Tristan Jarry from the Pittsburgh Penguins, a trade that has overshadowed their other deal when they acquired blue liner Spencer Stastney from the Nashville Predators.
Stastney an underrated pickup for the Oilers
While all attention has gone to the Jarry deal, as the team finally unloaded Stuart Skinner following a very rough start to the season, Stastney may end up being the best pickup of the day for Edmonton.
In 30 games this season (already a career high), the 25-year old has tallied 1 goal and 9 points with the struggling Predators, and according to analytics presented by social media personality JFresh, it appears he may be a major answer to their blue line woes.
Sure, he hasn't been given the opportunity to produce at a high level thus far in Nashville, but if his role expands in Edmonton, he appears ready to break out after 81 games played in the NHL thus far.
On top of that, the Oilers have had some major issues with injuries defensively thus far, and if Stastney can claim a full-time role on the left side and continue working on the immense potential he's flashed thus far, this will be a massive pickup for the team as they chase a third straight Stanley Cup Finals appearance.
