Tragic update emerges on Blues defensive prospect Matthew Mayich after ASU workout collapse

The situation surrounding Blues prospect Matthew Mayich has taken another gutting turn.

According to reporting from the Arizona Republic, a lawyer representing the 21-year-old defenseman says Mayich now has zero chance of recovery after collapsing during an outdoor workout at Arizona State on August 20.

Mayich, a Stoney Creek, Ontario native who St. Louis drafted in the sixth round, 170th overall, back in 2023, fell into a coma at Sun Angel Stadium during a military-style session run by Tim Zeisel, a non-ASU employee and former military service member.

The workout reportedly ran close to an hour in temperatures pushing 90 degrees, with players later describing a hostile environment that included limited water access and instructions not to complain.

Attorney Robert Carey has been vocal in pushing back against Arizona State's internal review, arguing the school's characterization of the workout downplayed just how brutal it actually was.

He says his own investigation tells a very different story and that the Mayich family deserves a full and honest accounting of what happened that morning.

Zeisel's attorney has offered a very different account, insisting the session was meant to build team chemistry rather than mimic special forces training, and noting that coaches and medical staff were present the entire time.

Mayich spent four seasons with the Ottawa 67's before a single year at Clarkson University, and he had just transferred to Arizona State this offseason hoping to build on his draft stock.

The Blues have said they're receiving regular updates through his agent, though the team never signed him to an entry-level contract.

For now, the hockey world can do little but wait and hope for more clarity, even as this story raises serious questions about supervision and safety protocols during offseason conditioning work.
