The Edmonton Oilers have been good thus far in 2025/26, but with the goal of a Stanley Cup, they're ready to make some major changes.
The Edmonton Oilers have reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals, and while they've come up short each time, captain Connor McDavid re-signing for a further two years this summer has given them a massive boost of confidence for the 2025/26 campaign.
While they've been good, the team currently sit at 28-22-8 overall on the season, sitting in second place in the Pacific Division standings, but with other teams loading up, some believe this isn't the same team that we saw a year ago.
Insider predicts major changes in Edmonton
So far, they've made the one change when they acquired Tristan Jarry in a deal for Stuart Skinner, Brett Kulak and a second-round pick, but many are hoping and waiting to see them make a blockbuster deal ahead of the 2026 trade deadline.
According to Elliotte Friedman, those changes are coming, with the NHL's top insider revealing that with the Olympic roster freeze, GM's are talking about big deals when the tournament ends, naming the Oilers as a team that could look completely different when the deadline arrives on March 6th.
As of right now, the Oilers likely need a big name player on the wing as well as someone to play on the right side of their blue line, but with limited assets, they're going to need to move out a roster player or two to get the job done.
Ultimately, this is a team that's in desperate need of change, and while Oilers fans may not love the idea of a sweeping change to this roster that they've fallen in love with, if they want to take the final step, that's what needs to happen.
