Canadian team emerges as frontrunner to bring Marc-Andre Fleury out of retirement
Marc-Andre Fleury retired from the NHL a season ago, but now, the Edmonton Oilers have been revealed as a destination if they can coax him out of retirement.
Last season was the final one in an iconic career for goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, with the then 40-year old hanging up the skates after two decades in the NHL with Pittsburgh, Chicago, Vegas and finally Minnesota.
Despite still playing at a very high level, the beloved netminder decided it was time to move on from the game, getting a farewell with the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2025/26 pre-season.
Edmonton Oilers eyeing Fleury if he comes out of retirement
Then, a recent report from Pierre LeBrun revealed that teams around the league are calling Fleury and trying to coax him out of retirement, although there's been no signs that he's ready to do that so far.
No teams were named in LeBrun's report, but many fans looked around the landscape of the league and figured things out rather quickly given how many goaltender-needy teams are out there.
Now, one of those teams has been confirmed as the Edmonton Oilers, with reports being that given the injury to Tristan Jarry, they could be looking to bring the veteran out of retirement.
The rumours were stoked by agent Allan Walsh on social media, and while there's no indication that his return is imminent, the interest in him continues to grow around the league.
Ultimately, given that he tallied a 2.93 GAA across 26 games a season ago, it's easy to see why teams believe he could be coaxed out of retirement to play at a high level, so for now, we will have to wait and see.
